Order of Service

Fellowship You may join the gathering any time after 9:30.

We welcome Andrew Jenkins, Volunteer Speaker for Christian Aid, from St. Katherine’s Church in Teversal, Nottinghamshire. Andrew worked in agricultural development in South Asia for many years.

Gathering & Church Notices – we will have a time for notices and updates until 10:40 . This will, hopefully, help us avoid the high-usage time for Zoom and the poor sound quality we’ve experienced in the early portion of the services. If you have something to share, please let Ana, Elaine or Anne know so you’re sure to be included.

Prelude (at 10:40 to, hopefully, avoid Zoom surge)
Everyone will be muted for the prelude.)

Call to Worship inspired by Psalm 68
One: Come before God with joy!
All: We come with jubilation!
One: Come worship the protector of orphans and widows.
All: We come to praise God with singing and exultation.

Hymn SP 241 Extol the God of Justice
Extol the God of justice
With heart and soul and voice.
Remember all his wonders,
Recount them and rejoice.
God stands with all who labour
For what is true and right,
Till wickedness and falsehood
Are banished from his sight.

Extol the God of justice
Enthroned for evermore,
A stronghold in affliction,
A refuge to the poor.
God hears the cry of victims
And senses their despair.
In faithfulness he honours
The faith that sparks our prayer.

Extol the God of justice,
However dark the day.
The hope that calls for mercy
Will not be turned away.
For evil shall not triumph,
Nor human sin prevail.
The Lord is God eternal,
Whose judgements cannot fail.

Prayer of Gathering & The Lord’s Prayer
Scripture Psalm 68:1-10, 32

Prayers for the world led by Harvey Baird
Prayer response --
One: We have a voice
All: And when we sing and pray together, a line is drawn and hope reborn. That is the song of Kingdom Come.

Scripture Luke 10:25-37 the Good Samaritan Meg & Hugh Abel

Hymn SP 237 God of The Poor (Beauty for brokenness)
Beauty for brokenness, hope for despair,
Lord, in your suffering world, this is our prayer
Bread for the children, justice, joy, peace,
sunrise to sunset, your kingdom increase!

Shelter for fragile lives, cures for their ills,
work for the craftsmen, trade for their skills.
Land for the dispossessed, rights for the weak,
voices to plead the cause of those who can't speak.

Chorus: God of the poor, friend of the weak,
give us compassion, we pray.
Melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain.
Come, change our love from a spark to a flame.

Refuge from cruel wars, havens from fear,
cities for sanctuary, freedoms to share.
Peace to the killing-fields, scorched earth to green
Christ for the bitterness, his cross for the pain.

Rest for the ravaged earth, oceans and streams,
plundered and poisoned: our future, our dreams.
Lord, end our madness, carelessness, greed;
Make us content with the things that we need.
Chorus:
God of the poor, friend of the weak,
give us compassion, we pray.
Melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain.
Come, change our love from a spark to a flame.

Lighten our darkness, breathe on this flame,
until your justice burns brightly again,
until the nations learn of your ways,
seek your salvation and bring you their praise.
Chorus:
God of the poor, friend of the weak,
give us compassion, we pray.
Melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain.
Come, change our love from a spark to a flame.

Sermon Interview with Andrew Jenkins, Christian Aid Volunteer

Closing Hymn Sing Praise 231 Sent by the Lord am I (from Nicaragua)
Sent by the Lord am I;
My hands are ready now
To make the earth a place
In which the kingdom comes.
(Repeat)

The angels cannot change
A world of hurt and pain
Into a world of love,
Of justice and of peace.

The task is mine to do,
To set it really free.
O help me to obey;
Help me to do your will.

Sending forth
One: The task is ours to do, to change this world of hurt and pain into a world of love, justice and peace.
All: We will follow Jesus and step up to this task, to make the earth a place in which God’s peace reigns!

The Grace
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and evermore. Amen.

  • Please keep your microphone muted unless you are speaking.

  • When we sing and pray together, we will hear one voice, and the others will be muted.
  • If the technology is compromised for any reason or goes totally wonky, we will end the on-line service immediately. If that should happen, we’ll try to restart as soon as possible, sending out an email to notify you.
  • At this time, we are not requiring a password, to ease the access for those still learning the 'Zoom ropes'.
