Psalm 23

Psalm 23 Reflection

by Thandiwe

My father taught me the 23rd Psalm when I was a little girl. I can picture him sitting on the edge of my bed in South Africa, repeating the words with me again and again until I knew them by heart. These words of comfort and presence could not feel more timely or relevant.

As I follow the latest news about the spread of COVID-19, I relate to Leah Schade who writes: “I don’t know about you, but my personality is Type A, so I actually have to be led to places that replenish my spirit. Those places often include green meadows and still waters. By reconnecting with God’s Creation, my soul is restored. [. . .] We need these sacred words to give shape and meaning to our lives. This psalm can frame our experiences within the larger picture of God’s loving will for us. Psalm 23, when we learn it by heart, can be the very presence of God shepherding us, restoring us, protecting us, guiding us, and blessing us with goodness and mercy.”

Psalm 23

Wensleydale version
From Peter W

This is a version of Psalm 23 "transliterated" into the Wensleydale dialect by Kit Calvert, a Dalesman through and through. Born in a cowshed (like someone else we know), worked as a shepherd, cowherd, odd job man and in many other occupations through a long life. In the 1930s, when the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes was on the verge of closure, he realised that the local farmers would no longer have a market for their dairy products, he persuaded the farmers to part with seven shillings and sixpence (a large sum for them) for a share in a cooperative to buy the creamery. As a result he saved Wensleydale cheese, for the benefit of all of us, and maintained employment in difficult times. He was a deacon of the Congregational Church and is memorialised by a children's playground in the centre of Hawes, the result of one of his many battles with officialdom. These are his words, from one who knows from his own experience.

T'Lord's mi shipperd - ah'll want fer nowt.
He let's ma bassock i t'best pastur.
He taks me bi t'watter side whar aw's wyet en peeaceful.
He uplifts mi soul, an maks thimgs seea easy
I can dew what's reet, an' glorify His neeame.
Even if ah git te deeath's deursteead, ah'll nut bi freetened
Fer He'll bi wi ma,
His creuk an' esh plant'll hod ma.
Thoo puts a good meal afoor ma'
Reet anenst them 'at upbraid ma.
Thoo ceuls mi heead wi oil, ah've meeat an' drink te spar.
Seurlie Thi goodness and mercy'll be mine
Fer aw t'days o mi life
An ah'll belong te t'hoose o t'Lord ferivver.
(wyet = quiet, cf wick = quick, alive, lively)
Hope you can find this as comforting and stimulating as I do. -- Peter W
