Music

While staying at St Paul's Guest House in Lusaka, I attended the Lusaka Presbytery Choir Festival at St Paul's United Church of Zambia, located on the same compound. Here are two songs from that festival for you to enjoy. The choir director is Victor (in purple shirt on left), who is also the manager at the Presbytery Bookshop. Enjoy the pulse of the spirit!

A Psalm a day: Psalm 18

Psalm 18:46
God lives! Blessed be my rock...

So much for not supporting vengence. Such a violent portrayal of God tends to make me cringe. This is not the God I want to lean on or rely on. And surely not the God I want to turn to when I'm angry at someone. In our generation, too often, we've heard how God, or the Voice-of-God, supposedly has led armies into battle and individuals to wreak havoc. I want no part of this.

But I do find power in metaphor. And this living God is an active God -- supporting what is just, taking action when necessary, opposing injustice, holding wrongdoers accountable and vindicating the innocent. This rock upon which we stand does not give out, but persists in holding firm to uphold justice and protect goodness. This active and solid God is the one upon whom I lean and rely.

Pray with me.
God, thank you for not giving up on this world when we go astray. Help us make choices for good that we might be part of your 'mighty army'. Amen.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver

You can hear Mary Oliver reading her poem by clicking the blue button above.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
