The hymn's history

Horatio Spafford, a successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago, was married to Anna and father of five children. Their young son died with pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, much of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire.

In 1873, having rebuilt his business, Horatio stayed behind in Chicago to deal with business concerns while his wife and four daughters traveled ahead to Europe. He planned to join them there.
On Nov. 21, the French ocean liner, Ville du Havre, set sail for Europe with Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters --Annie, Margaret Lee, Bessie and Tanetta -- on board. During the voyage, their ship collided with another, and within minutes the Ville du Harve slipped beneath the sea.

Anna, still alive, was spotted floating alone on a piece of the wreckage. Once safe in Cardiff she wired her husband, “Saved alone, what shall I do?”

Horatio booked passage on the next available ship. About four days out to sea, the captain told him that they were over the place where his daughters went down.

According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Horatio wrote “It is well with my soul” while on this journey.

A Prayer for Earth

Thank you for the ground beneath our feet,
Your good earth that gives life to all.
In a mystery we don’t understand,
green plants spring forth from your darkness.
Canyons and mountains, plains and deserts show us your infinite imagination.
We thank you for this firm foundation
on which to build our homes and our lives.
May we always love this land as you love it.
