Season of Creation (Creation Time)

Creation Time started in the Orthodox Church in 1989. The European Christian Environmental Network has urged churches to adopt a Season of Creation, stretching from 1 September to the feast of St Francis on 4 October. This was endorsed at the European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu, Romania in 2007, when it was agreed that this ‘season’ “be dedicated to prayer for the protection of Creation and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles (perma-cultures) that reverse our contribution to climate change.”  Andover United Reformed Church has observed Season of Creation for many years as part of being an Eco-Church.

On Friday, there are notices for the week which are also posted on the Salisbury Church website.  These include the Sunday Order of Service, Commitment for Life stories, prayers requests from Zambia, URC and community events, and other information for church members.  Then on Mondays, the weekly devotion that Ana puts together goes out to everyone’s email. It, too, may be going to your junk email box, so do take a look.

Gathering     Season of Creation Profession of faith from the World Council of Churches

We belong to the Creator in whose image we are all made.
In God we are breathing;
in God we are living;
through God we share the life of all creation.
We belong to Jesus Christ, the true icon of God and of humanity.
In Christ God is breathing;
in Christ God is living;
through Christ we are reconciled.
We belong to the Holy Spirit, who gives us new life and strengthens our faith.
In the Spirit, love is breathing;
in the Spirit truth is living;
through the Spirit, we are filled with the breath of God.
We belong to the Holy Trinity, who is one in all and Three-in-One.
In God we are all made;
in Christ we are all saved,
in the Spirit we are all united.

Opening Hymn Creator God – Brian Hoare © B. Hoare – the Jubilate Group CCL 7008215, Sing Praise 239
Creator God, the world around
Declares your glory – flower and tree,
The evening sky and torrent’s sound
And mountain stream and rolling sea.
Yet all this beauty cannot show
A God whom we can truly know.
Composer God, all music sings
Your power, your praise, your majesty:
In drum and trumpet, flute and strings,
In choir and song and symphony.
Yet music which inspires our praise
Can never fathom all your ways.
Designer God, in shape and form
The beauty you inspire is shown;
In line and colour, etched or drawn,
In sculpture, painting, glass and stone.
Yet all these talents can’t express
The full truth of your loveliness.
Mysterious God, though all the arts
Of nature and of human skill
May move us, yet our longing hearts
Are never satisfied until
In Jesus Christ you show your face:
A God of love and truth and grace.

Prayers for our world – Diane C

Scripture    Genesis 25:19-34 (Esau & Jacob)

Hymn     The Church is more than a building, – Amanda Udis-Kessler, music ‘Hyfrodol’ PD

Church is more than just a building,
more than wood or metal or brick.
Church is how we love our neighbour.
Church is how we tend to the sick,
Feed the hungry and heal the suffering,
welcome strangers and give to the poor.
All our service is as worship,
all our presence an open door.
Church is more than a weekly gathering.
Church is faith that’s come alive,
Filling hearts and minds with passion,
peace and hope that ever abide.
Even as the building’s empty,
we are touched by the deepest of grace.
When the holy lives within us
we are in a holy place.
We’re the church in the path we follow,
showing care to those in pain.
In the midst of fear and sorrow,
we’re the church and here we’ll remain,
Seeking justice, showing kindness,
singing praises in all that we do.
Church is more than just a building.
It’s our work toward a world made new.

God of fairness, bend us toward justice. Involve us as action figures in your on-going story of liberation. Make of us agents of wholeness, honesty, and humility, agents dismantling deceit, disfunction and disrespect. Grant us courage to play fair and trade fair. In this season of creation, use us to heal our world. Amen.

Closing Hymn        For the beauty of the earth – F.S.Pierpoint © PD CCL 1076520, RS 41

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:
Gracious God, to thee we raise
This our sacr1ifice of praise.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light:
Gracious God, to thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above;
For all gentle thoughts and mild:
Gracious God, to thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
For they people evermore,
Lifting holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Their pure sacrifice of love:
Gracious God, to thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

Sending Forth
