Scripture & Gathering

Opening Hymn RS 600 Christ is the world’s light – Fred Pratt Green ©1969 Stainer & Bell Ltd CCL 195646

1
Christ is the world’s Light, he and none other;
Born in our darkness, he became our Brother.
If we have seen him, we have seen the Father:
Glory to God on high.
2
Christ is the world’s Peace, he and none other;
No one can serve him and despise a brother.
Who else unites us, one in God the Father?
Glory to God on high.
3
Christ is the world’s Life, he and none other;
Sold once for silver, murdered here, our Brother-
He, who redeems us, reigns with God the Father:
Glory to God on high.
4
Give God the glory, God and none other;
Give God the glory, Spirit, Son and Father;
Give God the glory, God in Man my brother:
Glory to God on high.

Hymn Growing Tensions, by George Stuart Year A No. 65 Music PD

1
Jesus faced the growing tension;
Fierce hostility was grim;
Yet he wished to preach his gospel
In streets of Jerusalem;
He knew that his strong opponents
Planned his death to silence him.
2
Peter said’ “This must not happen”
Said that this should not be so;
Jesus, angered by his outburst;
Cried out, “Satan! You must go!
These are foolish words from humans;
Not from God! You are my foe!”
3
“If you would be my disciple
Bear your cross; come follow me.
If you gain the world but forfeit
Your true self, your dignity,
You cannot regain your honour,
Or your own integrity.”
4
When we live a life of loving
It will mirror Jesus’ way;
We will find a life worth living
When we give our life away;
We will then find true fulfilment
Blessings each and every day.

Sermon     Take up your cross

Closing Hymn RS 603 Lord for the years – Timothy Dudley-Smith ©1976 T.D-Smith, Music ©1976 M. Baughen – The Jubilate Group CCL 224957

1
Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided,
Urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way.
Sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided:
Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.
2
Lord, for that Word, the Word of life which fires us,
Speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze,
Teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us:
Lord of the Word, receive your people’s praise.
3
Lord, for our land, in this our generation,
Spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care:
For young and old, for commonwealth and nation,
Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.
4
Lord, for our world, when we disown and doubt you,
Loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain,
Hungry and helpless, lost indeed without you:
Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.
5
Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us –
Self on the cross and Christ upon the throne;
Past put behind us, for the future take us,
Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

Sending forth & the Grace
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all now and forever. Amen.
