Daily Prayers for our World

We pray for Afghanistan, as the UN launches the largest ever humanitarian appeal for a single country. Roughly 23 million people face acute food insecurity as the country experiences its worst drought in 30 years. God, we cry out as we offer our prayers for the Afghan people.

We give thanks for those who display bravery and humanity amid the dangers of war. Everyday civilians have shown extraordinary courage, such as Aleksey who has driven 180 people out of Mariupol to safety. We lament the circumstances that call for them, but we recognise the heroic acts of love and service displayed by many.

We give thanks that children in families with no recourse to public funds will now have permanent access to free school meals. Before this, thousands of children living in poverty were denied access because of their family’s immigration status. God, we are grateful that these children will now have guaranteed access to one hot meal a day.

We pray for governments and businesses to act urgently in moving away from fossil fuels. The IPCC has warned that global emissions must peak by 2025 to stave off the worst impacts of climate change. God, we pray that those delaying the transition to clean energy would be moved to understand the urgency of the situation. Help us to protect the earth and all who live in it.

We pray for Sri Lanka, which is struggling with economic crisis. Protestors have been on the streets amid shortages of fuel, power, food and medicine, as the country struggles to pay its debts and the currency slumps. God, we pray for solutions to this crisis. Help decision makers to consider the needs of their population.

We pray for those making difficult sacrifices as energy bills soar. Many are finding thrifty ways to stay warm and cook without using much energy as the cost of living crisis bites. God, we pray that people would be supported and not have to struggle. We grieve that this is the reality for millions in one of the world’s wealthiest countries.

We pray for better treatment of lone child refugees in the UK. 1,251 children have been placed in ‘unacceptable’ hotel accommodation since July, where they are at risk of abuse and exploitation. God, we pray that every child that seeks asylum in the UK would find safety, dignity, and welcome.
