Daily Prayers for our World

We pray for solutions to the challenge of an ageing population. The Resolution Foundation warns that spending on pensions and the NHS in line with demographic changes will be unsustainable without a new approach. God, we thank you that people are living longer. We pray that all would be able to enjoy later life with the necessary support.

We give thanks for Pennyhooks Farm, which engages young people on the autism spectrum to work there. This provides a sense of accomplishment and belonging for people who may not otherwise be given positive opportunities of work. God, we thank you for all who are willing to build bigger tables to include those who are often excluded.

As the focus for today is  World Social Justice Day, we give thanks for the security of formal employment. Informal workers, who often lack any form of social protection or employment-related benefits, are twice as likely to be poor compared to formal workers. We pray for all who are unemployed or in informal, irregular and insecure work, that they would find just and secure work.

As FairTradeFortnight begins, today we pray for farmers producers facing the impacts of climate change. Many farmers in climate vulnerable countries already struggle with low incomes, which magnifies the impact extreme weather can have on their livelihoods. God, we pray for a planet where the environment is renewed, and a just economy that enables the flourishing of all life

We pray for those dealing with the aftermath of Storm Eunice, one of the worst UK storms in 30 years. God, we pray for all affected by damage to property, loss of power, and loss of life. We think of those sleeping rough, in tents, in caravans, and in unsuitable housing, who are particularly vulnerable to adverse weather.

We pray for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been held in Iran for six years. She fears that she is a ‘bargaining chip’ in ongoing nuclear talks and is angry at her ‘life being stolen’ and the government’s ‘lack of urgency’ in returning her to the UK. God, we pray that a solution would be found to bring Nazanin back to her family.

We pray for resolution of global debt crises. The IMF says that some 60% of low-income countries are either in debt distress or at high risk of it, up from less than 30% in 2015. God, we lament global inequalities of power and money, and remember the human cost of economies crippled by debt. Help us to find just solutions to this crisis.
