Daily Prayers for our World

We pray for an end to the persecution of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. The Winter Olympics begin today in Beijing, giving an opportunity to challenge China on its policies of relocation and forced labour. God, we pray that international attention would be drawn to the plight of the Uyghurs. We pray that they would be protected and rescued from harm.

We give thanks for those striving for a kinder politics. Compassion in Politics, a cross-party organisation with backing from over 50 parliamentarians, is working to make UK politics more compassionate, kind and inclusive. God, help us to engage politically across difference in a way that builds up rather than breaks down.

We give thanks for leaders in sports and other sectors using their platform to tackle climate change. Australian cricketers have launched ‘Cricket for Climate’ to help the country’s 4,000 community cricket clubs to achieve net-zero emissions. God, we thank you for these prominent figures using their money and profile for good, and pray that others would follow.

We pray again for peace to be kept over Ukraine. The US has sent 3,000 extra troops to Eastern Europe in response to the some 100,000 Russian troops gathered near Ukraine. God, we pray for wisdom for strategists, diplomats, commanders and politicians, that military conflict would be avoided

We pray for those who will be pushed into ‘fuel stress’ by the 54% rise in the energy price cap. It is estimated that another two million households will now spend more than 10% of their budget on fuel, taking the total to more than six million. God, we pray that basic needs such as a warm home would not need be so expensive as to push people into poverty.

We pray for lorry drivers stuck in queues at Dover, which have increased in length and frequency this year. Most drivers are paid by distance driven, so time spent queuing is time that goes unpaid. God, we pray that the issues at the port would be resolved so that normal service could resume.

We pray for promises made at COP26 to be followed through with action. The deal to help end deforestation missed its first major deadline at the end of 2021, relating to logging in the Congo Basin. God, we pray that this and other commitments made to protect the environment would achieve their stated aims and not turn out to be empty words
