Daily Prayers for our World

We pray for efforts to end world hunger. The 2021 Global Hunger Index has described the UN sustainable development goal of zero hunger by 2030 as ‘tragically distant’, with 37 countries having ‘serious’, ‘alarming’, or ‘extremely alarming’ levels of hunger. God, we cry out to you for those in need, and pray for a world without hunger or famine.

We pray for island nations particularly at threat of rising sea levels. Often, small islands do not have the financial resources to cope with the effects of climate change and are reliant on the support of others, meaning COP26 could be ‘make or break’ for many of these nations. God, we pray that COP26 would prioritise the lives and livelihoods of those most vulnerable to climate change.

We give thanks for the growing number of men joining groups and campaigns in the fight to end violence against women. Charities working in this area have reported an ‘explosion’ of men coming forward to join campaigns after the murder of Sarah Everard earlier this year. God, we acknowledge that the fight for justice involves all of us. We thank you for those who have been moved to action, and pray that more would join them.

We pray for the victims of flooding in India and Nepal. Over 150 people have died as heavy rains led to flash floods, stranding residents and destroying homes and infrastructure. God, we pray for protection from further loss of life, and that relief efforts would be effective in response to the destruction

We pray for reduction in global use of fossil fuels. The UN Environment Programme has found that governments are planning to produce “more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5C”. God, we pray that world leaders would back up their rhetoric with action to move away from our dependence on fossil fuels.

We pray for those who are struggling to pay the bills. New research shows that nearly 4 million low-income households are behind on payments, up threefold since the pandemic hit. God, we pray for action to support those in debt, and that they would be protected from the suffering caused by financial difficulties.
